An exciting field of 17 two-year-olds have been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) on day one of the inaugural The Championships at Royal Randwick.
The in-form Team Hawkes stable is offered a good chance of continuing their incredible 2014 season this weekend, having nominated talented prospects London Lolly and Kaepernick for the 2014 Kindergarten Stakes.
Claiming the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) with leading filly Mossfun last weekend, Team Hawkes are arguably offered the greatest chance of securing another Group-level race for two-year-olds this weekend via London Lolly.
London Lolly was unlucky to finish fourth in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) on debut, finishing an impressive second amongst classy competition on the Quest Moonee Valley Maiden (1000m) second-up on February 14th.
Well and truly laying her claims as a two-year-old to watch this season over her last two starts, the talented Charge Forward filly barely looked troubled when winning both the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) ahead of Orujo and Golden Slipper third Bring Me The Maid and the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) most recently on March 29th.
With a view towards the Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) on April, the Hawkes’ elected not to accept the final position in the Golden Slipper field for London Lolly, and are confident of the decision paying dividends at Randwick this weekend.
Yet to appear on track competitively, the 2014 Kindergarten Stakes is set to be Kaepernick’s introduction to professional racing, having only contested two Rosehill barrier trials so far.
Also poised to make their racing debuts in the 2014 Kindergarten Stakes, Idyllic Scenery will join stable mate Redoutable Heart as Chris Waller’s two-pronged attack at Randwick this weekend.
Each claiming victories in barrier trials recently, Waller is optimistic of success in the Kindergarten Stakes on Saturday.
While unable to make much of an impact when sixth in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) most recently, trainer John O’Shea is confident classy colt Kuro can return to the winner’s circle in the 2014 Kindergarten Stakes.
Having strolled home to win the Reelmen Australia Plate (1000m) prior to the Pago Pago, a definite path has not been set for the Denman colt this time in; with this weekend’s result to decide which of the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) or Royal Randwick Stakes will be the next option.
Yet to finishing outside the places in four race starts so far, trainer Gerald Ryan has nominated Klammer for a position in the 2014 Kindergarten Stakes along with debutant stable mate Washington Heights.
Finishing third behind Law in the Adaptra Handicap (1000m) on debut on February 8th, Klammer has displayed a keen ability to overcome both wide draws and poor field position to win the Lightning Ridge Plate (1000m) and finish third in both the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) and Pago Pago Stakes most recently.
A final field of 16 and barrier draw for the 2014 Kindergarten Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
