Peter Snowden’s promising General Nediym filly Anise finally showed form at Randwick on Saturday April 9 when she won the opening AJC Australian Derby Day race – the $125,000 Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m).

It continued the brilliant run of success for Snowden and Darley in the juveniles’ features this autumn after Sepoy won the Golden Slipper just seven days earlier at Rosehill.

In the Kindergarten Stakes today Anise showed great determination to come from well back in the field to score a gritty victory.

She was the widest of the runners on the turn but still had plenty of running left, which showed her class.

Early leaders set a strong pace, with Fox at the front of the field throughout the early stages.

On the turn for home Fox maintain the lead, but on the straight the swoopers came out wide and fast to challenge.

With 300m to go the David Payne-trained Queenian hit the front before Anise and jockey Kerrin McEvoy fought for their life, driving down the outside.

In a photo-finish, Anise had stuck her head down on the line to nudge out Queenian for the win by a mere nose while Golden Slipper runner Hot Snitzel finished a further 1 ¼ lengths away for third.

Pacesetter Fox faded to finish fourth while race favourite, Gerald Ryan’s previously unraced Conroy’s Gap was too green and failed to perform.

Anise has now had four starts for two wins earning $172,000 in prize money and is now set to be sent for a spell.

Punters that backed the Peter Snowden-trained filly at Luxbet enjoyed the best winning payouts on the opening AJC Derby Day race!

#1 – Hot Snitzel (Barrier – 3) (56.5kgs)

Trainer: Gerald Ryan

Jockey: Brenton Avdulla

Career Stats: 4s – 1w – 1p

Last Start: 12th at Rosehill

Didn’t make an impact in the Golden Slipper but the fact he was there proves his worth. Big drop in class so expect to see him in the final 400m.

Bet on Hot Snitzel now at Luxbet

#2 – Boys On Tour (Barrier – 1) (56.5kgs)

Trainer: John P Thompson

Jockey: Jim Cassidy

Career Stats: 4s – 1w – 1p

Last Start: 2nd at Rosehill

Just missed out on the Golden Slipper after coming second in the Pago Pago Stakes. Looks in good touch and has barrier 1 to boot.

Bet on Boys On Tour now at Luxbet

#3 – Rolston (Barrier – 4) (56.5kgs)

Trainer: Chris Waller

Jockey: Glyn Schofield

Career Stats: 1s – 0w – 1p

Last Start: 2nd at Warwick Farm

Just the one start for a tight second placing at Warwick Farm. Gets barrier four and like all novices expect the unexpected.

Bet on Rolston now at Luxbet

#4 – Queenian (Barrier – 6) (56.5kgs)

Trainer: David Payne

Jockey: Michael Rodd

Career Stats: 2s – 0w – 1p

Last Start: 3rd at Randwick

Last start third was on the first of January so this may as well be considered a first up run. He looks out of his depth unless David Payne has worked wonders in the last three months.

Bet on Queenian now at Luxbet

#5 – Conroy’s Gap (Barrier – 2) (56.5kgs)

Trainer: Gerald Ryan

Jockey: Hugh Bowman

Career Stats: 0s – 0w – 0p

Last Start: -

Yet to run so who knows what will turn up on race day. Good habit to always include these in your exotics to avoid any nasty surprises.

Bet on Conroy’s Gap now at Luxbet

#6 – Jackpot Queen (Barrier – 9) (54.5kgs)

Trainer: Mathew Dale

Jockey: Mathew Cahill

Career Stats: 3s – 1w – 2p

Last Start: 1st at Wellington

Three starts for two seconds and a win makes for pretty good reading, especially when she was beaten by quality names You’re Canny and Pane In The Glass. Tough to judge her jump in class so maybe just a place hope.

Bet on Jackpot Queen now at Luxbet

#7 – Anise (Barrier – 8) (54.5kgs)

Trainer: Peter Snowden

Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy

Career Stats: 3s – 1w – 1p

Last Start: 4th at Rosehill

Won on debut and was beaten by Foxwedge second up. Last start in the Reisling Stakes she was fourht behind Satin Shoes and Elite Falls. One of the main contenders here.

Bet on Anise now at Luxbet

#8 – Fox (Barrier – 7) (54.5kgs)

Trainer: Adam Duggan

Jockey: Joshua Parr

Career Stats: 1s – 0w – 1p

Last Start: 2nd at Canterbury

She was only second to Do You Think first up so this is a horse with plenty of potential. Lesser known trainer and underused jockey, good story in the making.

Bet on Fox now at Luxbet

#9 – Aubazine (Barrier – 5) (54.5kgs)

Trainer: Gai Waterhouse

Jockey: Corey Brown

Career Stats: 1s – 0w – 0p

Last Start: 5th at Randwick.

She’d need to be at her absolute best and all the others at their worst for her to have any hope of sneaking a place in this race.

Bet on Aubazine now at Luxbet

#10 – Shadow West (Barrier – 10) (54.5kgs)

Trainer: Anthony Cummings

Jockey: Glen Boss

Career Stats: 3s – 0w – 1p

Last Start: 5th at Rosehill

Fifth in the Magic Night Stakes but only two lengths off the winner. Doesn’t look like a threat on paper but Anthony Cummings is due for some good fortune..

Bet on Shadow West now at Luxbet

An 1100m sprint will signal the start of the program on Australian Derby Day at Randwick Racecourse with the 2011 Kindergarten Stakes field finalised for Race #1.

The $125,000 Group 3 event is for two-year-olds but despite their young age there’s still a clear gap in experience between a few of the runners.

Hot Snitzel has the best resume to date with a start in the Golden Slipper last weekend.

Although he didn’t manage to figure in the finish his performances to get into the race will put him in good stead against this lesser quality field.

Anise didn’t get a Golden Slipper start but wasn’t far away after three top four finishes in three runs.

She won her debut race and finished second behind Foxwedge first up this year so should be well and truly amongst it here.

At the other end of the scale is Gerald Ryan’s second runner Conroy’s Gap which will be making his debut in this event.

Beginners luck has already come into play with barrier two and Ryan clearly sees plenty of good fortune about this horse, awarding it the ride of top jockey Hugh Bowman while Brenton Avdulla will steer Hot Snitzel.

Lesser known trainer Mathew Dale has a big shot in this race with Jackpot Queen finishing in the top two in here three career starts.

She’s coming off a first up win for the year and will jump from barrier nine.

Full odds on the 2011 Kindergarten Stakes will be posted in the coming days thanks to online bookmaker Luxbet.

We’ll also have form and tipping guides to help you get your Australian Derby Day betting off to a big start.

You could even bet for free on the race if you’re a new member who joins this week at Luxbet.

The Golden Slipper may be over but the juveniles aren’t ready to relinquish centre stage just yet with the Kindergarten Stakes penciled in for the end of the card on Derby Day at Randwick Racecourse.

The 2011 Kindergarten Stakes Nominations obviously don’t feature the very top echelon of Australian two-year-olds but there’s certainly more than a few handy runners among them.

Al’s Magic Miss has been in action for much of the year and has already stuck it to some big names in a few races where’s she’s been at huge odds.

Hot Snitzel is a Golden Slipper runner which says plenty about his talent and the step down in grade gives him every chance.

Houston Benefactor has the huge advantage of track wok with Smart Missile and is ready to step out of the shadow of the star stable mate.

Snowden, O’Shea, Waterhouse and Cummings are just some of the trainers represented in the race so you can be assured every runner will arrive in prime condition.

The 2011 Kindergarten Stakes shapes as an enthralling contest so stay tuned for the final field as well as form and tipping guides later in the week.

John O’Shea’s incredible filly Solar Charged stormed into Golden Slipper favouritism on Saturday when she outclassed her rivals in the $125, 000 Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) in a stunning display of speed and ability at Warwick Farm’s Chipping Norton Stakes meeting.

Solar Charged started as the clear favourite at $1.80 and lived up to all expectations, claiming a devastating 4 ½ length victory ahead of Elimbari ($7) with Widden Stakes winner Georgette Silk ($5) a gallant third a further half length away.

Solar Charged jumped from the far outside barrier seven and was never threatened when taking out the Kindergarten Stakes.

The impressive win, one of the best by a two-year-old seen on the track in years, has solidified her as the most promising young filly of the season. A winner of both her career starts to date, Solar Charged now sits as the warm pre-race favourite for the coveted $3.5million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on April 3 at $4.60 with IASbet.

Silver Slipper winner Chance Bye and Blue Diamond Stakes third placegetter Beneteau share second favouritism at $7.

Solar Charged will have her next start in the Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 20 before moving onto the world’s most lucrative race for two-year-olds at Rosehill.

Charge Forward, Solar Charged’s mother, ran a close second to Dance Hero in the 2004 Golden Slipper for O’Shea.

The feature race at the meeting, the $300, 000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes was won by Gai Waterhouse’s great galloper Theseo, and her filly More Joyous claimed victory in the Group 2 Surround Stakes.

This Saturday as part of the excellent line-up of feature races taking place at Warwick Farm, ten promising two-year-olds will take to the turf in the $125, 000 Group 3 Cabra-Vale Diggers Kindergarten Stakes (1100m).

Solar Charged is the hot pre-race favourite for the 2010 Kindergarten Stakes at $1.90 with IASbet. The John O’Shea trained Charge Forward filly won her solo race start back in November and will start from barrier seven with Hugh Bowman aboard on Saturday.

Other classy youngsters seeking a Black Type victory in the Kindergarten Stakes include Georgette Silk and Elimbari, both sitting as equal second favourites at $5.

Flying Spur filly Georgette Silk is coming off a sensational last-start win in the Widden Stakes (1100m) at Randwick, her maiden victory from two starts. Prepared by local Warwick Farm trainer Clarry Conners, Georgette Silk has drawn barrier eight for the Kindergarten Stakes and will be ridden by champion jockey Blake Shinn.

Elimbari has fared better in the barrier draw and will jump from gate three. The Kris Lees-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock was victorious in her first and only career start to date back in January at Rosehill.

Also keep an eye on the Allan Denham-trained Agister out wide in nine and Triple Crown in barrier one looking to atone for her last place finish in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January at the Gold Coast.

The headline race of the day is the $300, 000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes and it is the first time in three years the Chipping Norton Stakes has been held at Warwick Farm.

The Cabra-Vale Diggers Kindergarten Stakes is scheduled as race four on the day’s thrilling eight-event programme and is programmed to commence at 2:57pm.

The $125 000 Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) for 2010 will run at the picturesque Warwick Farm on Saturday March 6 as the course hosts its only major autumn meeting, the Chipping Norton Stakes Day.

As the first Group 1 status race of the year in Sydney, the Chipping Norton Stakes is the headline act of the day, but another three black type events are scheduled including the Kindergarten Stakes.

The Kindergarten Stakes is sure to draw plenty of interest as it is one of the best races for two-year-olds on the path to the prestigious $3.5million Golden Slipper Stakes on April 3.

Youngsters who have just competed in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on February 27 may then have a run in the Kindergarten Stakes, so keep an eye on the fit and well performing fillies and colts in this earlier event as an indicator for the 2010 Kindergarten Stakes.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Intertidal is a confirmed starter in the 2010 Kindergarten Stakes

A confirmed starter in the Kindergarten Stakes this year is Intertidal, the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel colt on the path to the Golden Slipper. Intertidal has had a brilliant career so far, winning two of their three race starts (both at Rosehill) and placing second in the other on debut.

The Australian Jockey Club (AJC) who host the Kindergarten Stakes close nominations for the event on Monday March 1 and will then announce the final field on Thursday March 3.
